News Detail » Clarence Cup Final report 2012
A large crowd enjoyed an incident packed game at Knockbreda between Dunmurry Rec and Derriaghy CC which saw 6 goals during normal time and 9 converted spot kicks and 2 dismissals, to give Division 1A side Derriaghy the Clarence Cup trophy for the first time. It took Derriaghy 29 mins to break the deadlock when D Elliott hammered in a 25 yard drive through a mass of players after the Dunmurry defence played head tennis. Shortly afterwards Dunmurry were reduced to 10 men when Robinson was dismissed for a rash tackle. This seemed to spur on the Rec and with 5 mins left in the half McCurdy equalised after a mix up by the Derriaghy stand in keeper Simpson.
On 58 mins Derriaghy's full back up ended Glen Hand in the box who duly got up a scored from the spot. With 15 mins left Dunmurry went further in front when Hand pounced on a defensive mistake and slotted the ball passed Simpson. It looked all over bar the shouting but Derriaghy had other thoughts. On 80 mins substitute Arnott looped a header past Warnock in the Dunmurry goal to reduce the deficit and unbelievably in the 95th min a speculative long range shot by C Strong drew the teams level and put the game into extra time. Dunmurry were by now out on their feet and Rutherford was dismissed 4 mins from time for a second bookable offence.
It took spot kicks to separate the teams and Dunmurry missed their first kick saved by Simpson and Derriaghy took the trophy by converting all their 5 kicks.
